Carle: Troisi brings X-factor to Socceroos

Former Socceroo Nicky Carle believes James Troisi can be Australias X-factor at the 2014 World Cup following the withdrawal of the injured Tom Rogic.

Carle, who will appear at the Hyundai Fan Park for Australia’s World Cup opener against Chile, hailed 25-year-old Troisi as a potential World Cup star.

Troisi scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions during Melbourne Victory’s 2013-14 campaign and looms as a key creative cog for the Socceroos after starting the farewell friendly against South Africa.

"I’m a big fan of James Troisi," Carle told FourFourTwo. "I think he’s had a great season at Melbourne.

"I’d like to see how he goes at that level. He’s a very exciting player.

"I’m disappointed about the Rogic announcement because everyone was excited to see him but it opens up a spot for Troisi in the midfield to have a go."

The Adelaide-born talent is highly regarded, having spent 2013-14 on loan at Victory from Serie A outfit Atalanta Bergamo, who own half his registration rights alongside Italian giants Juventus.

Troisi previously spent time at Newcastle as well as Turkish club Genclerbirligi where he narrowly missed out on crossing paths with Carle who also had a spell at the Ankara outfit.

Carle, who was part of Australia’s preliminary 30-man squad four years ago but missed the final cut, added the Socceroos needed their experienced heads such Tim Cahill, Mile Jedinak and Mark Bresciano to lead the way in Brazil.

As for Australia’s chances in Brazil, Carle was typically patriotic but realistic up against Chile, the Netherlands and Spain.

"With my hand on my heart, I hope they do as well as they can and prove a lot of people wrong," Carle said.

"I think everyone is realistic enough to know we’re in a very hard group, so if they can get a result in any of those games it would be great.

"I’ll be up nice and early watching all the games, supporting them as much as I can."

Carle will be at the Australia-Chile televised match at the Hyundai Fan Park on Saturday June 14 (Australia time), answering questions, taking photos and signing autographs.
